My mind is often boggled when I hear people saying there is no good music around these days. They just need a good trick. Truth is there’s a world of beautiful music out there they simply will never find.
I remember Tim Ferriss once mentioning something along the lines of knowing a post would be really valuable to people over time. Well I kind of feel that way about this post. In fact, that’s what makes it worth doing.
This point can be categorized along the lines of getting out of the flow that the entertainment industries all want you to be locked within, constantly tracking new releases and making purchases as they come out. Well that ship has sailed. This method is more along the lines of the DJ, crate-digging in the long tail of music that is often missed. The trick is to make the algorithm, in this case Spotify’s, do the crate-digging for you using the wisdom of the crowds.
Spotify playlist radio is your crate-digging robot…
I actually started with one track. Obsessed am I by one particular Fila Brazilia track, Heat Death of the Universe. Has there ever been a more controlled, groovy build? Listen to how the little clicks of beat bounce unpredictably from ear to ear. The night I first discovered how cool this track was I probably listened to it a dozen times.
So I wanted more like it. This is the best method I’ve found. Seems surprisingly simple & obvious, but I’ve only found this exact method in Spotify and it’s delivered fantastic results in the form of new music I never would have known about otherwise.
1. Make a playlist for the track or tracks you want more of.
Make a new playlist.
Then put the track or tracks you want more of in there.
2. Start ‘Playlist Radio’
3. Click ‘Play’ on Playlist Radio & enjoy the tracks.
This is likely to create an excellent stream of music for you right here.
4. Keep adding the absolute best tracks to the playlist you created in step 1.
This is where this trick gets really powerful. Try not to lower your standards too much if at all.
5. Repeat.
Next time you start Playlist Radio from your new playlist it will be even better. Continue to add new (to you) tracks to this playlist & you’ll just be getting deeper into that groove than you ever thought possible.
Enjoy!
